Peaked Cap worn by Derek Wright during Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958).
Olive green peaked cap with wool cloth lining inside; brown pile lined earlaps. Two labels stitched inside: First: "Cap, Field, Pile, M-1951 / Size 7 1/4 / 73-C-16240 / Correct Shoes, Inc. / Dated 30 Dec. 52 / DA-30-352-TAP-337 / O.I. 395-C-53 / Spec. MIL-C-1913A / Pat. Date 6 Nov. 50 / A. S. T. A. P. A. / Alpaca:- / 60% Wool-40% Cotton / Lining:-80% Wool-20% Cotton". Second: "CAP, FIELD, PILE, M-1951 / 1. For normal use, wear earflaps on top of cap. To do / this place left earflap through fabric loop on right earflap / and aline eyelets. Insert left cord through both eyelets and tie. / 2. For maximum warmth, wear earflaps down. Lace / cord through both eyelets on left earflap; insert left / earflap through fabric loop on right earflap and tie. / 3. For wear with helmet, the earflaps must be down. / Adjust headband of helmet liner to fit over the pile cap. / 4. The Pile Cap should not be laundered. Dry clean / only. DO NOT REMOVE THIS LABEL".
