Description
Hydrophilic Toric Contact Lens Trial Set. A small brown cardboard box with separate lid. The lid has two white stickers with handwritten text, “FIRST SOFT / TORIC / LENSES / '68.” In the right-hand corner of the lid is a 4c stamp.
Inside there are four glass vials with plastic lids. Each vial has a clear liquid solution inside and holds a single contact lens. Each vial has its own handwritten sticker on the front, “FS TORIC HYDRUN / 8.10 dia 12.50 […]”, “TORIC / CZECK MATERIAL / 7.5 0.2.7.0 +1.50 / 7.0 […] FLATTER / DIA 10.5.”, “CON-O-COID / 7.25 ECC 1.0 / -1.75 dia 10.5 / CZECH MATERIAL”, “F.S. cyl CZECH MAT / 8.1 12.5 - 675 […]”.
These lenses are hydrophilic toric trial samples. Toric lenses were designed specifically to correct astigmatism. These were some of the first soft toric lenses available internationally.
These lenses are made from HEMA - as they were not kept in a sterile state they needed to be autoclaved prior to trial fitting. This heat treatment caused the lenses to discolour over time.
