Brief History
Nokia, the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer, launched the 1011 on 10 November 1992, and it remained on the market until 1994 when it was replaced by the 2110. The Nokia 1011 is considered the first mass-market GSM mobile phone.
In New Zealand during this time period, BellSouth launched the first mobile phone network to compete with Telecom on 11 July 1993. This network used new digital mobile technology, known as GSM, in contrast to Telecom’s analogue AMPS network.
