Description
Caterpillar Air-Chute. Silk parachute still packed in backpack. Backpack is brown/tan with harness straps mounted to the metal framed back. Backpack is made up of four flaps of fabric that wrap around parachute and is closed using pins that attach to the parachutes release handles. Two handles are attached to parachute. Harness straps are cream coloured with metal closure at centre front labelled "TURN / TO UNLOCK / PRESS / TO RELEASE" and metal buckles for adjusting the length of the straps. Cloth label "IRVIN" is sewn onto harness at left shoulder. Label sewn to parachute is printed with black text "AIR CHUTES / IRVIN / PATENT NO'S / 188,059-1920 / 255,609-1923 / 247,062-192[?] / 252,095-1928 / OTHER PATENTS / PENDING / CATERPILLAR AIR-CHUTE / AEROPLANE TYPE / Manufactured by / IRVING AIR CHUTE / of GREAT BRITAIN Ltd. / LETCHWORTH, HERTS., ENGLAND. / Mlg NO. 05094 / Date.".
