Brief History
Clément-Bayard was a French manufacturing company established in Mézières, France which produced automobiles, aeroplanes and airships until 1914 when its factories were turned over for war production. The company was broken up in 1922 and the Paris factory purchased by Citroën. MOTAT’s Clément-Bayard had its chassis and engine assembled in this Paris factory in Levallois. French history is commemorated on the vehicle’s maker plate, which includes an emblem from a statue situated in front of the Mézières factory. It shows Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard, the Chevalier who saved the town of Mézières in 1521.

The vehicle was imported to New Zealand in circa 1909 where its bodywork was designed and built. It was imported as just a chassis and engine because of high tariffs imposed by the New Zealand Government for fully assembled vehicles at the time. The Bayard's first owner was farmer Edward Furness Barton (1883-1956) of Mataikona, later Masterton, and it stayed in the Barton family until 1958.

In around May 1958 George Gilltrap acquired the Clément-Bayard from Masterton antique vehicle enthusiast Lou Rinaldi for his Rotorua motor museum. Throughout the next year the automobile was displayed at the museum and select motor events around Te Ika-a-Māui (North Island). In 1959 George Gilltrap relocated the collection to Queensland’s Gold Coast and established Gilltrap’s Auto Museum. In 2018 the automobile was donated to MOTAT by the Gilltrap family, and the vehicle continues to be operational to this day.
