Description
"From 1954 to the end of the 1960s, diesel locomotives displaced steam from the rails and since 1971 have dominated completely. Rail operations were revolutionised by the new power - a much needed improvement in efficiency if rail was to be competitive with the roads. This program looks at the different locomotive classes that were developed for different purposes, the types of traffic hauled, and the marketing of rail in the deregulated 1990s. Included are a trip from Auckland to Wellington on the Silver Fern railcar, scenes of logging trains in the Bay of Plenty and coal trains on the West Coast, the operation of the Te Rapa marshalling yard, and lastly a contrast between second generation Dc and Dx classes and scenes of the original Df class in the Bay of Plenty in 1974.
