Brief History
These scales are believed to have been used at the Seed Testing Station in Wellington in the 1920s; an example of scales of this type is illustrated in use in 1921. Seed testing work began in New Zealand in 1895, analysing the purity and germination of seeds with the aim of increasing agricultural productivity. The first testing laboratory was opened by the Department of Agriculture in Wellington in 1910.
