"In the hustle of meeting newspaper and magazine deadlines it is often difficult to capture the atmosphere of a motor race, and that old enemy, space, usually limits what can be told in words and pictures - when selecting illustrations for this book, for instance, we had over six hundred photographs from which to choose, nearly all of them unpublished. Besides, for the thousands of followers of motor racing, such reports, however complete, do not provide a permanent record of which they can refer at any time. I am glad that Shell, which has had such a long and successful connection with motor sport, has made possible this publication. I hope it will be of interest to all those who thrill to the sound of a racing car's engine." - introduction. 1969.
