Box of colour slides taken during Thomas's trip to pick up a new Fokker Friendship F27 for NAC, from the factory in Holland to return to New Zealand, includes index of slides in numebred slots of box.
Thomas competed training with NAC as a pilot for the Fokker F27 in August 1961. Thomas was one of three pilots selected to crew the new F27 on delivery from the factory in Holland to New Zealand. The trip began in September 1961 when Dave Thomas and Neville Freeman set off from Whenuapai in a Canadian Pacific Airways DC6 to Honolulu, with a stop for refuelling in Fiji. After an overnight stay Thomas and Freeman left Honolulu in a DC8 jet for Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam with a refuelling stop at Edmonton and Vancouver along the way. Once in Amsterdam Thomas and Freeman spent a night in a hotel, then the next morning they went to the Fokker Factory and confirmed all was on schedule. Thomas and Allan, the senior pilot for the trip, travelled to London for two nights to visit Farnborough and the air show there. From London flew back to Amsterdam to complete flight planning for transfer of Fokker Friendship F27, New Zealand aircraft registration ZK-BZF from Holland to New Zealand. The flight journey from Amsterdam with the aircraft was by way of: Rome, Athens, Damascus, Bahrein, Karachi, Deli, Calcutta, Bangkok, Saigon, Zamboanga, Biak, Darwin, Cloncurry, Brisbane, Norfolk Island, Brisbane. Thomas was one of the three co-pilots with senior pilot Allan. First part of the trip home began on September 12th 1961 from Schipol to Rome where Thomas flew as co-pilot. The crew and aircraft landed in Wellington in September 1961.
