Black and white nitrate negative of Jean Batten at Hawera Aero Club with two unidentified men.

Image captured during Jean Batten’s 1934 New Zealand tour, on 27th July 1934 at Dunlop Field, Hawera Aero Club’s landing field in Taranaki, by Cornelius Bernard Fitzgerald.

From Wanganui to Hawera Jean Batten was accompanied by three female pilots, Trevor Hunter, Eva Parkinson and June Summerell. The pilots flew in their de Havilland Gipsy Moths to escort Batten to Wanganui, then New Plymouth and Hawera.


Jean Batten was welcomed at Dunlop Field from New Plymouth. Batten was a guest at Rotary Club for luncheon when she was made a temporary member, then had dinner at Hawera Aeroclub in the evening.

Fitzgerald was a photographer and based in Hawera and primarily took horse racing photographs.
