Brief History
The Eurocopter AS355F1 Ecrueuil is a twin engine light utility helicopter. It was built in 1982 in France by Aerospatiale (est. 1970). It was operated by the New Zealand Police in the Auckland region between 1994 and 2018 and was one of three ‘Squirrel’ helicopters leased to the New Zealand Police by Airwork NZ Limited in an agreement dating from 1988 when air services were first introduced into NZ policing. The Police initially leased a Bell Helicopter and changed to this model one year into operations.
Police 1 ZK-HKG has recorded 28,000 flying hours, a very high number of flying hours, which is thought to be one of the highest recorded for this model of helicopter. The helicopter was purchased second-hand and was modified for the Police, with the addition of specialist Police equipment.
Using aerial services for Policing was a result of the increasing number of bank robberies in Auckland during the mid-1980s and early 1990s. Gangs were targeting banks to raid, using stolen get-away cars to flee. The use of a Policing unit using a helicopter was promoted as a method to track these vehicles. This, along with changes brought in by the banking industry, aided the reduction in bank robberies.
The NZ Police Air Support ‘Eagle’ unit was based at the Mechanics Bay heliport on the Auckland waterfront from 1988 and is now in based in Onehunga where it continues to operate as an airborne observation platform which enables coordination with ground units.
