Brief History
This tyre is from the tail wheel of Jean Batten's Percival Gull Six aircraft registered G-ADPR which hangs in the international terminal of Auckland Airport. The Percival Gull was flown by Jean Batten on record flights between England - Brazil (1935) and England – New Zealand (1936). During WWII, the aircraft was requisitioned for reconnaissance work supervised by Sir Nigel Norman. It was renumbered AX 866 and had maintenance work carried out, including being fit with a replacement tail wheel tyre at RAF Ringway (Manchester, United Kingdom). The replaced tyre was given to Harold Hughes who was working on parachute designs for the Airbourn Forces Experimental Establishment at the time. It was donated to MOTAT in 2021.

The tyre was manufactured by Palmer Aero Products, a subsidiary of British Tyre & Rubber Company. This London (United Kingdom) company designed and manufactured a range of products for the aircraft industry, before eventually being acquired by IMI Marston.
