Description
Snider sawback, bayonet sword with scabbard sheath. Blade made of steel. Made for New Zealand imperial forces for a Martini Henry or Snider rifle. Stamping on blade shows a design under which is "W" (possibly WD), under which is a crown; under that is the letter "E"; and under that "47". On the reverse side, the numbers "9/81" are stamped ( made in September, 1881). Blade has about 18 serrations on one edge, for half the length of the blade. Hasp has attachment/hand guard with large hole in one end (to fit onto a rifle). Also has spring-loaded catch (to attach to a rifle) which is released by a push-button recessed into the handle. Also, the number 1029 is stamped into the "hand guard" metal work. Handle has a hard bakelite-looking handgrip with criss-cross pattern impressed sheath (part 2) made mainly of stitched leather with metal at each end. Dark brown metal with black leather.
