Brief History
Canadian firm Research in Motion pioneered email capability in mobile phones and its BlackBerry devices were well known for their QWERTY keyboards. Blackberrys were especially popular with business customers, governments and celebrities in the 2000s.
The BlackBerry Bold 9000, with the iconic QWERTY keyboard, was launched in May 2008. It used the proprietary BlackBerry operating system. RIM lost market share to other smartphone manufacturers in the later years of the 2000s, for example the touchscreen iPhone, launched in 2007, became a strong competitor, as were phones using the Android operating system, such as Samsung.
