Brief History
The American made Model T Ford, known affectionately as ’Tin Lizzie’ is arguably the most famous car ever built. It was a cheaply-produced American car which found favour all over the world, and in 1919 half the vehicles in the world were model Ts. The Model T Ford was ideal for the rugged conditions found throughout New Zealand and it was simple to operate and repair. It was high off the ground, and its steering and ignition coped well with our rough roads and stream crossings. The Colonial Motor Company produced Model Ts in Auckland, Wellington and Timaru. Some 90,000 Model Ts were sold in New Zealand.

The Model Ts had two forward gears. You would hold the left pedal down for first gear, let it off for second gear, and hold down the middle pedal for reverse. The car automatically went into neutral when the hand brake was put on. The accelerator was worked by a hand throttle. Between 1914 and 1925, Model Ts were only produced in black, however from 1926 they were produced in other colours and given the name ‘New Beauty.’
