Description
Carpet sweeper, Ewbank Empire, hand-operated. Main body and detachable handle.
Main body: Wood with iron steel fittings mounted on 4 wheels; varnished; brand name and model type painted front/back. Oblong box with a raised cradle into which the handle fits, the cradle folds flat. The wheels are rubber mounted with a small brass wheel between which drives the sweeper brush underneath - the driving wheel marked 'Ewbank Patent. Ball Bearings 23610'. The Brush has 6 spiralled sets of bristles.
A metal tab topside in one corner acts, when depressed, to release the dust storage compartments either side of the brush. There is a rubber buffer strip running around the sweeper which although tied on with string, fits so well to suggest that it may be original.
Handle: Wood, varnished with a brass screw-thread at its bottom. Slightly shaped; has a hole at its top.
