Description
British Power Boat Company “Power Marine” Sea Lion, W-12 piston engine, 12 cylinders in 3 banks of 4, angled in broad arrow pattern, water cooled; 500hp; Displacement 24L.; S/No. 44.
Engine body painted cream with rocker covers blue and embossed with name “NAPIER”. Mounted on a wooden base painted grey. "'POWER" and "BTH" (British Thompson Houston) are embossed on some parts. "POWER / NAPIER / AMAL" is inscribed on a unpainted metal part. Maker's plate located near transmission reads "POWER" / MARINE ENGINE / MANUFACTURED BY / THE BRITISH / POWER BOAT / Co. / SOUTHAMPTON ENG."

Marine conversion of Napier Lion XIA aero engine. As used in RNZAF 64ft High Speed Launch W1 which was powered by three of these engines.
Brief History
This is a Napier Lion engine. Initially designed and manufactured by D Napier and Son, United Kingdom, for use in aircraft, this type of petrol engine proved to be so powerful that it was adapted for use in cars and boats as well as in aircraft.

This Napier Lion engine was initially used in a Fairey 111F aircraft. It was later converted for marine use, specifically for a launch used to pull the flying boats at Hobsonville.
