Brief History
Only the flight deck survives to represent the four Hastings transports operated by Nos.40 and 41 Squadron (RNZAF) between 1952 and 1965.

NZ5801 was built in England, with its first flight on 3 November 1951. It was handed over to the RNZAF and delivered to Whenuapai on 26 March 1952. Initially flown with No.41 Squadron until transferred in December 1954 to No.40 Squadron. No 40 operated long-range transports to the UK, USA and throughout South East Asia. The aircraft had its final flight from Whenuapai to Ohakea on 2 February 1966.

NZ5801 was presented to MOTAT by the RNZAF during the late 1960s, however transport problems delayed the delivery of the large aircraft, and in 1971 a decision was made to breakdown NZ5801 into selected components for display - the engines, undercarriage unit and the flight deck.

Since being at MOTAT the remaining components of NZ5801 were repainted circa 1986, in preparation for a display at Whenuapai to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the RNZAF. Later, during the early 2000s, extensive interior work was undertaken. This included replacing the floor, repainting, new upholstery on seats and the refitting of replacement interior panels.
