Description
Wheelchair - wicker; mounted on a steel chassis and solid rubber tyres; brown. Has vinyl covered seat-padding, a wood push-bar. Chair shape, with padding on the seat, back of the legs and foot-rest. The push-bar is behind the top of the chair and is attached to the basket in 4 places.
The wheels are spoked, large at the rear, smaller at the front, with solid rubber tyres.
Used circa 1890-1900.
Brief History
The modern wheelchair, with 2 large front wheels and a small caster behind, dates from the 18th century. It had. From the 19th century, wheelchairs were built with wooden frames, wicker seats and adjustable arm and footrests. Large rear wheels to allow self-propulsion were patented in 1894.
