Description
Auckland Tramway Blacksmiths forge - cast iron box with a bosch. The larger division of the box houses the fire base. The bosch contains water for cooling the air pipe which runs through the water filled tank. The cast iron pipe extends out into the perimeter of the clay-lined fire base. The air pipe is also surrounded with clay to preserve it from damage by the heat. Tuyere water cooled forge
Brief History
Installed in 1902 at the Auckland Tramway's Ponsonby Depot and Workshops on Jervois Road, this forge would have been in constant use to maintain the Tram fleet.
It was later moved to the Royal Oak Workshop on Manukau Road, where it was used to repair buses. It remained in use until the mid-1990s when this Workshop was closed.
The forge was manufactured in Birmingham, England by Alldays and Onions, a company renowned for their quality blacksmithing equipment.
