Description
A French Legion of Honour medal. The medal was awarded to Jean Batten in 1936 and is the highest decoration in France.
The medal features a five pointed white star interspersed with green leaves, at the centre is a circular medallion with a gold cameo of a human head in profile. The border of the medallion is blue with gold writing: 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE /1870'. The medal is suspended from a green wreath which is attached to a red ribbon.
The case for the medal is maroon with a hinged lid. The top of the case is impressed in gold with "LEGION D'HONNEUR / CHEVALIER". The interior of the case is lined in white silk with a red velvet cushioned insert.
