Description
A Rectangular, metal base, course and speed calculator. Written in white on the base is a number scale titled AIRSPEED M.P.H. Written in red on the base is a number scale titled AIR SPEED KNOTS. Attached to the base, on a slide, with 2 black adjustable clips (one on either side), is a circular disc with a degree scale (0.360) on it. There is also a black strip with 2 number scales written in white, ranging from 0 - 40. These scales are titled PORTDRIFT + STBDDRIFT. To mark these scales is a black triangular marker with a 'T' on it. To mark the circular disc, is a clear plastic triangular marker with CY written in yellow. Inside the circular disc are 2 scales - one written in red, ranges from 0 - 50, and is labelled KNOTS. The other, written in black, ranges from 0 - 60, and is labelled M.P.H. There is a metal peg at the centre. Attached to the base with a metal clip and overlapping the disc, is a clear plastic ruler with a scale of 20 - 200 written in black, and a scale of 20 - 172 written in red. On the reverse of the base are 2 overlapping, black circular discs; the bottom disc is adjustable. The bottom disc has a number scale, written in white, and is labelled DISTANCE - MILES. The top disc has a number scale, written in white, with a red arrow marked 60 and is labelled TIME-MINUTES. Between the numbers 60 and 70, the disc is scratched with a line and the letters NM. The disc is marked in white: COURSE AND SPEED CALCULATOR MK.II W.G.PYE & CO. LTD., SERIAL NO.4421/39, A.M. REF NO.6B/119. There is also a crown depicted. The discs are attached to the base with a screw at their centres. On the base are several pencil markings and stamped at the bottom is: REMOVE THIS COVER TO CLEAN.
The case is rectangular, wood carrying case with 2 metal hinges and clasps. There is a leather handle with 2 metal brackets attaching it to the case. Inside the case are wood and foam supports covered with green felt. There is a pencil scribble on the inside of the lid. Inside the base, the figures 25/0390 and 217° are written in pencil. There is also a purple circular stamp (letters not legible). H. Hughes & Son Ltd.
