Brief History
This model of the Washington K 88 was built in the 1960s by Graeme Wilkinson, life member of the Auckland Society of Model Engineers. It ran for over 30 years on the Society's track at Panmure and on a portable track at school fairs and company Christmas parties. The original Washington K88 was one of the first two K class locomotives imported into New Zealand in 1878 from Rogers Locomotive Works in New Jersey. In New Zealand it worked the Christchurch to Dunedin Express service, before becoming the original 'Kingston Flyer' carrying tourists between Gore and Kingston. The locomotive has since been preserved at the Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum near Ashburton.
