Description
Short S45H2 Solent Loading Slide Ruler. Metal ruler, long and rectangular. The middle of the ruler lengthwise slides in both directions. This section is 25 mm wide and sits slightly closer to the top than the bottom of the ruler. The section that slides is full of number scales labelled as part of the aircraft. For e.g. Cabin E and Ladies' Dressing Room. When the slide is moved beneath it are legends and a conversion table. The top border of the base of the ruler has written on it in black: "British Overseas Airways Corporation". "Short S45H2 Solent Loading Slide Ruler". "Made by Blundell (Rules) Ltd., Luton, Eng." "DRWG. No. HQ-E5690A". The bottom of the base has a scale of numbers from -35 to +40. The scale is colour-coded into "Unsafe" highlighted in pink, "Safe but..." in light green and "Best Range" in dark green. "7/2" is etched in bottom left corner. The back of the ruler has the instructions for the ruler, an image of the Solent with all areas labelled and a chart. Case is brown, possibly vinyl, rectangular in shape. Has cardboard or plastic sewn into lining to stabilise fabric. On underside of case is written "Lancasirian 691" with a triple strike-through. On other side is printed "G-AHIR / SOLENT".
