Description
Steel cross-section of first ever tram rail in Auckland. One side has a polished surface while the other side has a brushed finish. The cross-section has a 'T' shaped composition, with a hook on one end. The section has roughly cut sides and striation marks are visible.
Brief History
This section of track is from one of the first tram rails laid in Auckland and dates to 1902. In 1957 the tramway system was closed and the tracks removed. This track was from Lower Queen Street, and in 1967 it was sliced up and given away as a commemorative token to celebrate the opening of the MOTAT trams.
