This is an amateur radio transceiver used by Cliff Tait during the aircraft delivery flights he made for Hamilton company Aero Engine Services Ltd (later New Zealand Aerospace Industries Limited). It helped Tait maintain communication with his family and provided backup when aircrafts radio systems failed.
