Description
Circular, silver (.800 fine) medal with ribbon presented to Flight Lieutenant William Raeburn Green, spare ribbon for display on uniform and wax paper case. Reverse: the Royal Crown rests on the stump of an oak tree, flanked by a lion and a lioness. At the top left is the date 1939, and at the top right, the date 1945. In exergue, though not ruled off, is the wording: THE DEFENCE/MEDAL. Obverse: profile without crown of King George VI, facing left, and the legend: GEORGEIVS VI D: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP:
Ribbon: the centre of the ribbon is flamed-coloured, and the edges are green, symbols of the enemy attacks on Great Britain. Two black stripes represent the blackout in Great Britain. Green is 1.25 inches wide, central stripe of orange (0.5" wide).
No clasps or bars were issued for this medal. Suspender: a plain, straight, non-swivelling with a single-toe claw.
This medal was awarded to British military and civilian personnel for a range of service in the United Kingdom, and to British, British Commonwealth and British Colonial personnel who served outside their home countries in a non-operational area or in an area subject to threat such as air attack.
