Brief History
Apple first introduced the iPod portable digital music player in late 2001, several years after digital music players first became available. The first iPod was smaller and easier to use than other players on the market and it was the beginning of what became a flagship product for Apple for many years, with a range of different iPod products and numerous revisions of each.
The iPod shuffle, the smallest of Apple’s iPod range, was launched in 2005. The shuffle was designed without a screen to be very lightweight, ideal for use when exercising. This second generation model has an integrated clip on the reverse, allowing it to be easily attached to the user’s clothing for example. With 1GB of storage it could hold around 240 songs.
The shuffle was discontinued in 2017 along with the iPod nano, which was the next size up from the shuffle both physically and in storage capacity. There were 4 ‘generations’ of the iPod shuffle, each generation marking a substantial redesign; the second generation was launched in 2006, with the last, fourth generation launched in 2010. iPods have largely been replaced by the increased functionality of mobile phones, although the iPod touch is still available in 2020.
