Description
A group shot of eight men and two children. From left to right are two standing men, four seated men, one child, a man leaning on a vehicle, a child seated on the vehicle and a man leaning against the tire of the vehicle. All the men are in uniform - dark trousers with a light coloured strip down the seam, a tunic with a double line of buttons down the front and caps with letters on the front. Most of the caps are two tone (dark band and peak, white top) but two are a solid dark colour. From the left: the first man is standing at an angle to the viewer but with his head turned to face the viewer. He is smiling with his right hand in his trouser pocket. He has a cigarette is his left hand which is palm up about waist height. His hat has the letters G L on it. The second man is standing partly behind the first man. He has a moustache and his head is turned to the left. There are creases in his tunic that seem to indicate that his hands are in his trouser pockets. His hat has G L V F B on it. The third man is seated. His right leg is crossed over his left leg. His right arm is across his lap and his left arm is bent to hold a pipe about throat level. He is facing the right and appears to be laughing. His cap is dark coloured. The fourth man is seated with his right leg crossed over his left leg. His arms are crossed at waist level. He is facing the viewer and smiling. His hat has G L V F B on it the fifth man is sloughing in his seat with his hands in his trouser pockets. He is smiling and looking towards the viewer. His cap is dark coloured and has the letters G L V F B on it. The sixth man is seated with his arms on the back of an empty chair that is in front of him. He is tilting the chair back so that the front legs are in the air. He has a moustache, is smiling and looking to the viewer's right. His hat has G L V F B on it. Then there is a standing child, hidden partly behind the empty chair, with his/her left hand raised to waist level, He/she is wearing a beanie, dark jacket over a dark top with knee high socks and shoes and is looking at the viewer's right. The seventh man is leaning against a vehicle. The vehicle is probably a fire engine as it has a ladder loaded on its top. His left leg is raised off the ground, his left arm is shoulder height and resting on the top of the vehicle and his right hand is in his trouser pocket. He is smiling and looking to his right back towards the group of men. While he is wearing a cap, no letters are visible. The second child is seated in the driver's seat of the vehicle with the driving wheel in front of him. Both his hands are on his knees. He is wearing a cap, dark top and shorts. His head is at an angle to his right and he is looking back towards the group of men. The last man in the group is leaning against the front wheel of the vehicle. His arms are crossed at waist level. There is a cigarette hanging from his mouth. He is at a right angle to the viewer, is smiling and looking across the group of man. While he is wearing a cap, no letters are visible. In the background is a brick building with two doors. One is shut, showing a wooden double door. The other is open and has a vehicle parked part way out of the building in it. Information from Laurel Cropp, Leo White’s niece, who thinks Leo White may have taken the photograph, indicates that the man, second from right, leaning on fire engine, is Albert Edward White (b. 1882), Leo White’s father, and the children are Nina White (b. 1919), Albert’s daughter and Leo’s sister, and Ira White (b. 1919, and twin of Nina) – Albert’s son and Leo’s brother. They were about six years old when the photograph was taken c1925.
