Description
On October 15 1895 a Peugeot was exhibited at Britain's first motor exhibition at the show grounds at Tunbridge Wells. Sir David Salomons' (on the right, seated backwards) Type 9 was one of the main attractions. At the centre of the image is a Type 9 Peugeot. It is seen from the right side. Four people seated, two facing forwards, two facing backwards, in the car. All are wearing suits and top hats. The canopy is folded back on the left. The upright steering column and horn are set in the centre in the floor of the car. The front lights are level with the end of the car. The car has no bonnet and ends just behind the two people who are seated backwards. The forward wheels are slightly smaller that the rear wheels. All are spoked. There is something similar to a bicycle chain attaching the rear wheels to the engine. Above the rear wheels and below the rear seats are vents set in the side of the car. The fender curves down over the rear wheels, dips to form a step and then raises over the front wheels. A fifth man in a suit and cap is standing with his hands on his hips behind the Peugeot. In the background is a fence with onlookers behind it. In the right background is a building. In the far background are trees and the sky. The story behind the photograph is that David Salomons was very proud of his new car and he took it and some of his visitors out onto the road for a drive. The top speed of the car was 15 mph. The law at the time said that a man with a flag should be in front of any car on the road. On this occasion there was no man and no legal trouble perhaps because David Salomons was the mayor of Tunbridge Wells at the time.
