Description
"Magneto-Electric Machine" (for nervous diseases). S. Maw Son and Thompson, London.
This consists of a wooden box with a hinged lid. On the front panel of the box is a brass handle which when turned in the clockwise direction, rotates a large toothed wheel. This wheel, in turn, is connected to a much smaller toothed wheel. One revolution of the large wheel produces several revolutions of the smaller wheel. This smaller wheel is directly attached to a pulley. A string passes over the pulley which then goes on to pass over a smaller pulley connected to a pair of coils. These 2 coils pass rapidly over a powerful horseshoe magnet. When the outer handle is turned, the system starts to turn the coils rapidly thereby generating a current. There is a connecting brass terminal on either end of the box for hooking up a pair of electrodes (missing). On the inner side of the top lid, are a set of directions for use. The box itself does not have a base.
