I have one just like this. It has been in the family for perhaps a century. My grandfather started a rural carrying business after WW1. My dad took over the business when he came back from WW2. I remember seeing 2 gallon tins like this in the 1940s sealed with the wire and stamped lead seal on them. Later, dad mostly used the tin for extra petrol on long trips, then for his lawn mower. When dad died 35 years ago, I used it for my lawn mower's petrol, and to remind me of dad. After 35 years in a sunles shed it ha become a bit rusty on the outside.
