Description
Telephone booth (kiosk), circular, concrete. The booth is painted red with a circular green painted roof, green base and spire on top. The front is open, without a door, and there is a lattice-work window frame on the rear.
Manufacturers: unknown, possibly New Zealand Post Office workshops.
Brief History
Public telephone boxes were in use in New Zealand by the 1910s; by 1926 there were 409 spread across the country and many at the time would have been concrete structures like this one. Cast iron telephone boxes, made to the iconic British ‘K2’ design, were also common before the traditional red phone boxes were phased out.
