Description
A first day cover commemorating Lord Elworthy, Marshal of the Royal Air Force. Cover includes a head shot of Lord Elworthy. Under the image the text reads: Chief of Air Staff 1963-1967
Chief of the Defence Staff 1967-1971. Under the text is a crest of what looks like a belt circling a castle. Out of the top of the castle is an arm holding an upraised sword. To the left side of the image is a badge and motto. The motto reads: Per ardve as astra. To the right side of the image is a Royal Air Force Station Waddington badge and motto. Across the top, to the right of the heading is a crest, a postmark and a stamp. The crest has two birds on either side of a shield with the motto Fide et sedulitate under the shield. The postmark reads 70th anniversary of the no. 101 Squadron 27 Jun 87 British Forces 2139 Postal Services. The 8 p stamp has the Queen's head and a lion on it. The lower right area is filled with information. The text reads:
Flown in Vulcan XH558, the last aircraft of this type in flying condition, from Royal Air Force Waddington to Royal Air Force St. Mawgan on 4th August, 1987. Flight time: 2 hours. On 5th August flown in the St. Mawgan International Air Display. Flight time: 15 minutes. The next day, flown from Royal Air Force St. Mawgan to Royal Air Force Waddington. Flight time: 1 hour 45 minutes.
