Brief History
Rail wagon L 533 is an L1, 4-board, highside wagon type. These wagons were produced between 1890 to 1900 for the North and South Islands and were amongst the earliest style of wooden bodied highside wagons. The wagon has wooden transoms and headstocks, and steel sole bars. It was converted in the early days of New Zealand Railways to carry passengers to special events where there was a shortage of passenger accomodation. This type of rail wagon was obsolete by the late 1960s, with only a few remaining into the late 1970s. It came to MOTAT in 1971.
