Description
Cheque Perforator.

Wrought iron perforator with four legs with holes in them to be secured to a surface. The perforator has a black body with red and yellow narrow stripes repeated on base and large lever handle that pushes down to compress the two parts of the body. There are six small pins which protrude from a sliding metal panel. When the panel is slid back, there are rotating check stamping dies with numbers engraved on each of them above holes.

Two plates with text are attached. The top plate reads "JEAN O.SAUVEN / 58 EAST RD. / LONDON. N. 1.". The second plate is circular and reads "SUPPLIED BY / WESTON'S PTY. LTD. / PACKING ROOM SUPPLIES & / GOODS HANDLING EQUIPMENT. / AUSTRALIA / BRANCHES ALL STATES".
Brief History
This cheque perforator was used by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to cancel and date bank cheques. Using the perforator, the cheque would punched with a code when it came into the bank. The code was changed every six months, to provide a level of protection.

The company Jean O Sauven was established in London probably in 1924 and was originally owned and managed by Jean Sauven. In the 1950s Sauven changed their name to Sauven Marking Machines to reflect their move into online coding machines using rubber type, ink rollers and a range of flexographic printers. The company still trades today as Sauven Marking Ltd manufacturing ink jet printers that are used mainly in the food industry for date coding products.

Kia ora Simon, thank you for your enquiry. As a public museum MOTAT does not provide a valuation service, however most auction houses do and should be able to assist you with this.
