Description
Long rectangular enamel sign from the top of a tram. White with "INSIST UPON HAVING / NELSON MOATE & CO'S TEA" in blue lettering.
Brief History
This sign would have been attached to the side of a tramcar and is an early example of transit advertising - using vehicles to advertise products to a wide range of commuters and residents.
Nelson Moate & Company, based in Wellington, were established in 1875 and is believed to be the first company to import Ceylon tea to New Zealand. The enamel sign was made in Birmingham by the Patent Enamel Co Ltd. This Company was the first in England to focus on manufacturing enamelled iron signs.
