Brief History
Rail passenger car A 851 was one of a series of 16, 47½ foot carriages built in 1904 by the New Zealand Railways' old Petone Workshops as a single-compartment car. It was built as a second class car, gas lit, with 9 windows each side. It is fitted with "sit and grin" wooden backed seats arranged in a back to back pattern, and loose horse hair filled squabs (cushions). The interior of the carriage was finished in native kauri wood panelling. A 851 was designed as a non-smoking carriage, with the major distinction from a smoker carriage being the way the windows opened.

After 53 years of service with the New Zealand Railways, and the latter part of it in the Auckland area on the Huntly to Glen Afton passenger trains, A 851 was withdrawn from service in June 1957 and was sold to Pukemiro Collieries near Huntly. It carried miners the short distance between Pukemiro Junction on the Glen Afton branch and Pukemiro mine. It was pulled mainly by a Barclay 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotive, also in the MOTAT collection.

In 1967, when the Pukemiro Collieries Railways closed, Neil Cropper Holdings obtained A 851 and donated the car to MOTAT. It has been in service on the Western Springs Railway since 1982.
