Brief History
Aa 1017 was originally built in 1908 as a 50 foot, Aa 1st class Main Trunk car. This carriage was used on the first train set to travel over the North Island's Main Trunk Line on the 'Parliament Special.' This service was organised with a temporary track months before the Line officially opened in November 1908, so that Members of Parliament could attend the arrival of the US Great White Fleet in Auckland Harbour in August 1908. Aa 1017 was purchased in the 1970s from the NZR by a private individual who required the 2 end-sections of the body. They donated the underframe and the centre portion of the car to MOTAT.
