Brief History
Railroad car A302 was built as a 44 foot, 2nd class, low-roofed car with two compartments and longitudinal seating. It appears to have been erected by New Zealand Railways at the Petone Railway Workshop, Wellington in 1884. It was originally classed as a "Smoking" car and would have been lit by kerosene lamps. The car served the Wanganui region approximately until the 1920s, when it was allocated to the Auckland section. It would have been converted to gas lighting about 1900-1920. It came to MOTAT in 1971 and is now in storage.
