Brief History
Rail car A 84 was built as a 44 foot, 1st-2nd Class, 2-compartment carriage with a centre toilet, and was gas-lit. It would have spent life on the Wellington section, travelling as far as Wanganui-New Plymouth-Taumaranui and possibly the Napier section. It was converted to E 646 on 13th of September 1941 for use as an eye-sight testing car and the interior was painted black for this reason. It was later allocated the number Ea 36 and used by the Signals Inspector in Taumaranui as a signals maintenance carriage on the Stratford-Okahukura branch. These cars were built in considerable numbers between 1897 and 1903 and, as late as 1935, a total of 170 were still in service with many lasting into the 1960s. These cars were mounted on a 4 ft 10 in. wheelbase bogies and weighed in at 14 tons on average. They seated between 34 and 48 passengers, according to the nature of the internal arrangement.
