Description
1880 horse-drawn hearse. Black, decorative. The horse-drawn hearse came from the East Coast where it had been stored for many years. Originally 4 horses were required to pull the hearse - the horses as well as the hearse decorated with plume feathers. Hearses were elaborately decorated in Victorian times. Passers by would stop, men taking off their hats in respect, as the funeral cortege passed by. One of the horses displayed with the hearse is very old and is from Wiseman's store in Queen St - however not accessioned.
