Description
Dark brown soft leather flying cap. Black rubber earpieces, leather chin strap with dark brown felt lining on reverse and a tan suede interior lining. Adjustment strap with buckle on the exterior back of the cap. Four domed straps on exterior of cap.
Makers label on interior of the cap reads 'Size 3 / 7 1/8 to 7 3/8 / AM / 22C/451”.
Mark under proper left ear “A(crown) M / 22C/451”.
Brief History
This leather flight helmet was made by the UK Air Ministry and used by Warrant Officer Ernest Davenport while serving with No.7 Squadron, Pathfinder Force, Royal Air Force. Davenport served with Bomber Command and was shot down in 1943 over enemy territory and became a prisoner of war for two years in East Prussia (Lithuania) and then in Barth Germany.
