Description
Daguerreotype showing a middle aged seated man with hair styled into curves and peaks.

The image does not show his legs only to where his hands are placed on his knees. He is wearing a dark suit with a dark waistcoat. The collar of his white shirt is tied shut with a bow. A gold watch chain runs across his right side. His left hand is resting on his left knee. His right hand is resting on a small dark coloured oval table to his right. The man is looking directly at the viewer. He has wrinkles across his forehead and bags under his eyes. Behind him is a rural image. From the left: an empty space leading up to a stone wall, behind the wall is a tree on a mound with lower vegetation to the right, half way up the tree and to the right is a building with a door and single window centred in the narrow end, the building has a single chimney at the far end, to the right of the building is a row of bushes and a picket fence, above the building are mountains and the sky, on the right are mountains, the second one back with trees and what looks like a windmill on top of it.

Encased in a dark brown leather case, the front cover has a central floral pattern in a scalloped oval surrounded by a curled leafy pattern which is contained by a thin frame of small curves, hinged, with two metal hooks that latch into hoops on the upper edge. The inside of the case has light brown coloured plush lining that has a central pattern of two flowers surrounded by flowers, leaves and curves in which each quarter is a mirror image. The rectangular image has two rounded corners at the top. It is within a gold coloured metal mat with square dots surrounding the image and an other edge of leafy patterns. The rectangular outer metal surround has flowers in each corner with a spiral strip along the edges. Outside of this is a thin strip of fabric that matches the lining inside the front cover.
