Description
Side tipping muck trolley, ex NZR. This kind of wagon was commonly called a "Muck wagon" and was used from the very early days of the NZR by the permanent way staff for transporting spoil and dirt and dumping it. It is fitted with a turntable so that the whole top portion of the wagon can swivel at 45° to the track. The tray then tips depositing its load. These wagons had disappeared from use by the late 1960s.
This particular example, although retaining many original components and mainframe, has had the top wooden portion of its body replaced in recent years.

Brief History
This kind of trolley was commonly called a "Muck wagon" and was used in the very early days of the New Zealand Railways by the permanent way staff to transport spoil and dirt from track sides and any slip material endangering the track. It was loaded by hand and wheeled to the discharge point. It is fitted with a turntable which turned the tray 90 degrees to the track for tipping. These wagons disappeared from use by the late 1960s. This wagon has been restored.
