Description
Showing the fuselage, right wing and right tail fin still above water. At the tail of the Lancaster is the dinghy, one crewman sits in the dingy and a second crewman stands on the left tail fin. They are both holding a rope. The crash is mentioned in Sqaudron Leader John Stoneman's pilot's flying log book in an entry dated 13 April 1943. The crash occured during an operation to Spezia when the aircraft was hit by flak over the target resulting in the petrol tanks being holed. Also mentions the successful ditching of the Lancaster in the Channel with all crew uninjured and being picked up by air force rescue three and a half hours later. Crew on that flight listed as P/O Elder, P/O Bryan, F/S Flynn, F/S McMahon, Sgt. Stanley, and Sgt. Dixon.
