Another comment: it is looking towards neither Kilbirnie nor Evans Bay (both off towards the left) but rather towards Miramar.

The view is looking north-east across where the airport runway now is, so the building in the background will where Miramar South School was until recently. Rongotai College would be out of sight off the top right of the photo, on the other (near) side of Coutts St.
