Description
The contents of this book are, for each class of NZR locomotive, a diagram of its leading dimensions, axle spacing and weights, and salient technical details, opposite a black and white identification photograph, taken by the NZR Publicity branch. Index in front includes all NZR locomotives, registration numbers, place made, method of disposal/changes in numbering, and blueprint numbers. Includes locomotives c.1870s - 1970s. Includes MOTAT locomotives F, DA, AB, DSA, K, EB, TR, WW, and Y.

The diagrams were compiled by the NZR Mechanical Branch for their own use, but copies were given to the Civil Branch engineers who used them for evaluating locomotive effects on the track structure and bridges, and for estimating crane lift weights after accidents and mishaps. Civil engineering staff routinely carried copies of locomotive diagrams in their field bags, but only for those few locomotives currently in use on their districts. This book is unique for its completeness and matching photographs.

Compiled during the railway career of NZR chief civil engineer J S Berry, who retired in the mid-seventies. The book was then left in the CCE's personal office where it remained until the position of CCE disappeared in the reorganisations of the late 1980s.
