'America's Space Programme has provided the world with a capability for repeated surveys of Earth's environment and resources at minimal cost. Such surveys can contribute to the management and utilization of our planet for the benefit of all peoples. NASA's Landsat, original Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS), program is advancing this capability.
A single Landsat can survey nearly every area of our planet every 18 days. Additional Landsats, properly phased in orbit around the globe can increase the frequency of such surveys.
Satellites can significantly extend Earth survey capabilities.
As examples:
- One Landsat view can cover an area requiring more than a hundred aerial photographs.
- The view from the Landsat can reveal vast features that may be obscured in mosaics made from aerial photographs.
- The view from the Landsat can reveal vast features that may be obscured in mosaics made from aerial photographs.
-Mosaics of aerial photographs may take so long to acquire and assemble that they are no longer timely when completed.
- The cost per square mile is far less by satellite than by aircraft.
Landsat takes photographic images in the red and green bands of visible light and in near infrared bands. The latter are beyond what the human eye can see.
Landsat converts the images to radio signals that it transits to Earth.
Computers on the ground reconstruct the images to produce black and white or colored pictures to bring out features that might otherwise be obscured. For example, healthy vegetation may stand out in bright red white diseased or insect-infected plants may appear gray.'
