Description
1942 General Motors truck. Type CCKW 352 Military 6-wheel truck (6 x 6 WD) with canvas body cover.
Brief History
This is a CCKW-352 military 6-wheel truck (6 x 6 WD) with a canvas body cover and short wheel base. The type were produced in high numbers for the United States during World War II and used in Europe and the Pacific to tow artillery and for most cartage needs. The CCKW were eventually phased out in the 1950s by General Motors Corporation's (GMC) M35 series, but some were still in service throughout the 1960s.

The name CCKW is derived from GMC terminology C - designed in 1941, C - conventional cab, K - all wheel drive and W - dual rear axle. They were equipped with a GMC 270 4.4 litre petrol engine which could deliver 78kW at 2,750rpm. The power plant is what made them considered to be reliable and highly capable for cartage needs.

This truck came to New Zealand in 1945 after being used in the Pacific Arena of WWII. It was gifted to the New Zealand Government along with other U.S. vehicles and supplied equipment to acknowledge the cost of food supplied by New Zealand during the war. It is one of several that were sold by the War Asset Board to G. T. Gilles who refurbished the vehicles and on-sold them. This one went into private ownership and, before being acquired by MOTAT, was restored with original parts over a period of four years.

Purchased by Motat from a private collector a Mr Ross WILSON. Replaced a similar 6x4 version of poor condition. This vehicle was one of few short wheel base 6x6 version s left here by USA troupes, featuring timkin type diffs.
